Gourmet Galactagogues

10 Mar

So this baby’s got one hell of an appetite. Since I’m not that keen on spending five or six hours a day trapped on the couch, I’m taking fenugreek, which is supposed to increase milk supply. Of course you can buy it in capsules online, but Mr B prefers to roll like this:

Bought in a giant bulk pack from the always-reliable Fiji Market (great post and beautiful pics from heneedsfood here)

Mixed with yogurt and dumped on a peach. Or sometimes a fig. My gourmet galactagogue…

Gaaah bitter way to take fenugreek! I am also using fenugreek as well – in the kind of quantities that can alter the scent of your wee and sweat! I use about 100gms to make a fudgy ball. If you grind the seeds to a meal and then soak in a cup of boiled milk overnight you will get a dough like consistency that you can roast off in a pan with ghee (takes ages but amazing alchemy takes place!). It turns into a crumb you could add to other things like biscuits. Gets rid of the bitterness. Indians love this stuff and every new mum gets a gift of it from an older relative to munch on!

Sounds scrummy! Such a shame we become estranged from traditions like that… I could do with a few old aunties right now :)
